As Designer II at CannonDesign, I had the opportunity to contribute to the Design Development phase of dual renovations New York Presbyterian Brooklyn and Allen Hospitals renovations. While this wasn’t a flashy, high-profile project, it was a meaningful and foundational experience that allowed me to grow as a designer within the healthcare architecture space.
The project focused on renovating behavioral health units to expand and update the units. My role was hands-on and detail-oriented: I worked on room data sheets, developed plans, elevations, and sections, and coordinated with a diverse team of consultants. It was a collaborative effort, and I learned the importance of clear communication and staying organized while working within a large, multidisciplinary team.
Behavioral health design requires a thoughtful balance of functionality and empathy, and I enjoyed tackling the challenge of translating those needs into clear, actionable design documents. While the work was often technical—ensuring dimensions were accurate, materials met code, and details aligned with the overall vision—it was grounded in the goal of creating much-needed behavioral health spaces that can help both providers and patients flourish.
While not a groundbreaking project, it’s a testament to the kind of designer I am: detail-oriented, collaborative, and always mindful of the people who will ultimately use the spaces I help create.
